Paper was a protagonist at the Salone del Mobile for more than just accessories. Consistent with the eco-friendly lifestyle many producers promoted, paper was a frontier many designers explored. During the fair, it stood out as a real alternative to traditional materials like fabric, plastics, glass, ceramics. The results were incredible, requiring an upclose and tactile test to prove. Outside of the fair it seems that the trend also has momentum.
Paper is the new... ...interior complement. Hella Jongerius designed these accessories, called "Props" for the Vitra stand at Salone del Mobile. The idea behind the pieces is to make the showrooms feel personalized like a real home. They are a welcome alternative to plants and impersonal accessories normally seen in showrooms.
...high impact sculpture. Milan-based Daniele Papuli is a master at sculpting paper as thought it were fabric. Here it hangs and flows in undulating and striking forms. Currently on exhibit at Il Giardino Segreto in Rome.
...oil and canvas. Artist Georgia Russell uses a scalpel to transform books, music scores, newspapers and other reading material into intricate sculptures. Her work was part of the "Rarity: Women Only" Exhibit sponsored by Verardo Italia at the Milan Salone del Mobile. Work below represents "Beauty".
...Barbie. Midori Co. Ltd presented some of its paper products at Milan's Salone del Mobile. Here, a Decorate your Own Kimono set from their Paper Craft (PC) line. (Visit site in Japanese to see paper products, have a look at the index cards!)
...lighting accessory. Rice paper pods made by Takeo Paper Ltd. paper products.
...pret a porter. Seen at the Citterio Collection stand at the Salone del Mobile, you have to see them in person to believe them. Beautiful decorative accessories, label "Yoko Miura".
...Curtain. Italian paper-producer Fabriano uses its store space in Milan as a gallery for artists who use Fabriano paper. Here, the via del Babuino store exhibits a dress and jewelry made of paper, and a paper curtain by artist Elisa Silva, boxes (follow link for curtain image).
