Maison Objet:  The Fashion Home for Spring-Summer 2007

[For a soundtrack to this piece, click here.]  With the addition of Pavilion 7, where Now! Design à Vivre is housed, the January edition of the fair covers even more square footage than before.  As mentioned earlier, the January edition has an additional feature over the September edition, the Maison & Objet éditeurs section of Pavillion 5 which includes textile, wallpaper, and carpet producers.  Situated directly behind the main entrance to the fair, this is the best place to start to identify colors, patterns, and the feel of the season’s fashion home.  People have written to ask recommendations on fairs to attend, and I’d say that if you’re looking for accessories for the home (not high-end furniture design, although there is some of that, too), Maison & Objet’s January edition is the best total package you can get in Europe, and also offers other interiors fairs during the same week. (Sorry for the blurry pictures, I'm really not able to hold a camera steady!!!)

Tucked away in an unassuming niche between two stands was a display of colors representing the palette which exhibitors propose for the season [above, color tiles, pendant lamp shade by anthologie quartet, fifty/fifty lamp by r'pure.]  There is an undoubted focus on a few colors:  magenta, chartreuse, mustard, orange, blue/cyan, red.  Also the combination of black and white, and the white with gold and silver accents, and the wintery icy white and crystal interior.  [Below:  structure by Passaggio Privato]

Flowers and plants have been protagonists of interiors for the past few seasons in small prints.  This season, echoing imm-Cologne motifs, the individual detail of a small print is enlarged to be the focal point of the interior, from a single large flower blossom, to larger than life blossoms as a repeat on a fabric, flowers are still in, just bigger.  Favorite vegetation:  cherry blossoms, maple leaves, irises, water lilies.  [Below:  De Gournay, Osborne and Little, Sahco, Pepe Penalver, Manuel Canovas, Arte]  Flock wallpaper and brocade fabrics are still going strong.

The home as a Dance Floor?  For elements of a disco interior, mirrors are key accessories:  Cut into the shape of chandeliers, mirrored mosaic tiles, elaborate frames.  Is it to add light and the illusion of space in interiors, or is it vanity?  Also prominent: the disco ball-reminiscent light, the shiny interior, the glitter and glitzy finished effect, the combination of black and white (with skulls!).  [below:  Mathieu Lustrerie lamp, David Medri mirrors/mosaic, Anthologie Quartet, Philipp Plein sparkling black wall and silver lamp, mat&jewski collaboration with Murano based Nosdos, Makomim Megaron Collection]

For the less trendy or more refined palate, the pristine white interior has a new friend:  porcelain with relief patterns are also a hot proposal.  These items highlight fine craftsmanship with exquisite detail.  The technique is applied for both decorative items and functional items, and is oft paired with silver or gold accents. Stripes (or ribbon), which I personally believe are providing inspiration in a range of ways, not just in fabric, but also in furniture design, are also being proposed for the table top.  [Below:  Marve Daage, Vange]
