I ate these at a wonderful Bed & Breakfast on East 36th Street and Madison Avenue in New York.  There were very few left by the time I got there, but I was lucky enough to get the recipe from the owner even after I devoured them all like Cookie Monster.  His mother, Mrs. Gallo, bakes them every year for Christmas.  She got the recipe from her mother, Mrs. La Placa.

The handwritten recipe card read:

From the Kitchen of Mom Gallo
Recipe for Nanna’s Love Knots

  • ½ lb. butter
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 ½ cups sugar
  • 1t vanilla
  • 5 ½ cups flour (start with 5 add more as needed)
  • 8t baking powder

Melt and cool butter.  Add eggs, sugar and vanilla.  In a large bowl put flour, baking powder, then mix with a wooden spoon.  Let stand at room temperature for ½ hour.  Roll out on a floured surface, turn and knot.  Bake at 400F degrees for 6-8 minutes.  Cool then ice (recipe follows).  Yield:  100 cookies.  (Don’t worry if they don’t look exactly like knots.  Sometimes they puff up!)

Icing:  ¾ box powdered sugar, 1t vanilla, 2T butter.  Milk as necessary.
